Property Taxes
The tax amount on your Assessment & Tax Notice is for taxes levied from January to December of the current year. The Town of Sexsmith Tax and Assessment Notice are mailed at the end of June and are due by July 31st of each year.
 
FAILURE TO RECEIVE A TAX NOTICE IS NOT CONSIDERED SUFFICIENT REASON FOR NON-PAYMENT OF PROPERTY TAXES.

Yearly, Town Council approved the budget based on the expenditures required to maintain and expand services necessary in Town.  From this total amount, alternate sources of revenue such as user fees and grants are subtracted.  The balance of the operating budget with vary from year to year and so with the municipal tax rate.
 
A Bylaw is passed annually in conjunction with our budget process.

Pre-Authorized Tax Payments
The Town of Sexsmith offers its residents a pre-authorized tax payment plan, which is an easy way to pay property taxes. A few facts about the pre-payment plan are as follows: Simplify payment of taxes by budgeting 12 installments from January to December; No worry about paying all taxes within 30 days of the mailing of tax notices; The current year pre-authorized tax payment is based on the previous year actual taxes; All prior taxes must be paid to December 31 of the current year for eligibility in the plan for the upcoming year. (e.g. All 2009 and prior taxes must be paid to December 31, 2009 for eligibility in the 2010 plan).

Payments can be made as follows:

In Person
Payment can be made in person at the Town of Sexsmith office between 8:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m and 1:00 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. Cash, debit card, and cheque are all accepted at the Town office.
 
Drop In Slot Payments
A drop in slot is located on the front door of the Town of Sexsmith office building at 9927 – 100 Street. Please make sure to identify the account name and contact information.

Address Changes & Name Changes

All land ownership changes and name changes are updated to our tax roll based solely on information provided by Alberta Land Titles. Address changes in our tax system will be made at the owner’s request, but all name changes must be made through Alberta Land Titles. If you require a name change, please drop into the Town Office, 9927 – 100 Street, for an application, contact Alberta Land Titles at 780-427-2742, or visit the website.

Tax Incentive for Small Business
 
The Town of Sexsmith has passed a split tax rate bylaw in order to offer taxes at a lower rate to small businesses.

The possibility for different business tax rates for small business has recently been made possible with amendments to the Municipal Government Act.

A municipality must do this by bylaw and must define in the bylaw what a small business is in their community.

The Town of Sexsmith has defined a small business property as a property in the municipality other than designated industrial property having fewer than 10 employees across Canada, owned or leased by a business operating under a business license issued by the municipality.

Interested applicants must have an application in by December 31 of the year prior to the year of taxation to be eligible. If you wish to apply for the 2019 tax year please have your application in no later than December 31, 2018.

Please re-apply on an annual basis.

The application requirement is so that proper budgeting for the coming year can be done.
