The Sexsmith Hotel

The first hotel was built in 1918. In 1928, the original hotel was demolished and rebuilt. The doors to the new hotel were open on New Years Day in 1929. This included a beer parlour as prohibition was over. This hotel was cited as fully modern and the best accommodations north of Edmonton. Meals varied in price from 35 to 40 cents. Rooms were a $1.00 per night or a $1.50 if you wanted a view. In 1972 the hotel burned down and was rebuilt in 1974. In 1979 the Alamo Bar was opened and is still in operation today.

Butcher Shop

In 1923, this building was opened by William Turvey and it housed a barber shop, pool hall, and butcher shop. In 1926, John Olson bought the building and operated it as Olson Meats.  The Olsons sold to Bill Retzlaff and the doors sadly closed in 2013.  It is now the popular restaurant Cowbella's.

Revitalization

In the late 1980’s the Sexsmith business community decided to turn the slow economy around by looking to their past to guarantee the future. They examined the history of the community and using the historically designated blacksmith shop as their focus, adopted a 1920’s theme for the town.

Vintage buildings were restored and more modern ones such as the Insurance Office, Royal Bank, Town Office have been changed to blend with that style and character. The streetscape has been improved with theme lighting to compliment the project. The revitalization of the downtown was carried out to instill new life and spirit in the community in hopes that the downtown would again become the heart of the community.
